Linda Martin (Ireland Eurovision Winner 1992)

Eurovision stars from both past and present gathered in Manchester for the inaugural ‘Manchagen’ event, celebrating their songs and talent.

Linda Martin has represented Ireland twice at the Eurovision Song Contest even winning in 1992.

We chat to Linda in person to hear how she’s feeling ahead of her performance tonight.

Linda, how are you?
I’m very well, thank you.

Surely it’s not your first time in Manchester?
No, no, no! I’ve been to Manchester many, many times. It’s a fabulous city. It really is. I was so sad today near the venue; I was looking around at the big red brick buildings, and they must have been factories at one time. That would have been a little hub, but now it’s empty. It’s so sad, it really is.

How was soundcheck?
The sound is fabulous. I’m looking forward to it. I’m just hoping they don’t give me lots of stairs. (Linda is currently wearing a leg brace due to an injury.)

Now, you are a legend when it comes to Eurovision. Two-time entrant, one-time winner. You’ve been involved in the Irish selection show for many years. Do you feel that the Irish selection show now needs its own standalone show rather than the Late Late Show studio?
Yes, like the old days. RTÉ keeps saying, “Oh, it costs money,” but I think sponsors would come on board and make a big evening of it. Make it special, grand, people dressing up. I really do think we need it. You can’t really see what the acts can do in a TV studio.

What do you think of Emmy’s song this year?
I think she’s going to do well. Of course, it’s poppy, and she’s lovely. I think she will come across beautifully on camera, and that’s important as well. The public has to like what they see in front of them.

Especially with 200 million people watching, you need that connection, don’t you?
Obviously, Eurovision has been a huge part of your life, but what does it mean to you to still be involved in all of this? It’s just such a privilege. I just love it.
