As part of the first ‘Manchagen’ event Eurovision stars from past and present came together to showcase their songs and talent in Manchester.
Kyle Alessandro is competing in the 2025 contest representing Norway with his song ‘Lighter’
We chat to Kyle in person to hear how preparations are going ahead of travelling to Switzerland.
Kyle, you are the Norwegian entry for Eurovision 2025. How are you feeling?
I’m good! How are you?
Yes, good, thank you. Is this your first time in Manchester?
Yeah, it’s my absolute first time! I’ve been to London once, but I feel like Manchester has different vibes. London is such a huge city, and there’s too much to do. Here, it’s more like just lovely, and the weather is nice too.
Kyle, you’re lucky! It’s not normally like this! Can you tell our readers about your journey to Eurovision 2025?
I presented myself to Melodi Grand Prix (the Norwegian pre-selection show for Eurovision) in 2023. I was in a trio, and we came last place in the final. Then I waited a year because my mother got diagnosed with cancer during that time, so I didn’t go to MGP 2024. I did send in a song, but it didn’t get picked. But then 2025 came around, I sent in my song, I got into MGP, and I won!
Everything happens for a reason, and now you’re going to Eurovision!
Yeah, absolutely! I couldn’t have done it in MGP with my mother still in treatment—that wouldn’t have felt right. Now my mother is cancer-free, and she inspired me to write the song I’m taking, “Lighter.” She always tells me to never lose my light, and that’s where the “I’ll be my own lighter” lyric comes from.
You must be looking forward to Basel! How are rehearsals going?
Everything is done!
Nearly there, or done-done?
Not nearly—it’s done! I just need to get there now. The only thing maybe is costume tweaking. We are building the armor even more, yes, sticking with the armor concept, and we are finishing the final touches. Also, planning how I should wear my hair. I started wearing my hair natural two days ago, so now I have curls.
We are all wishing you the best of luck for Basel!
